Winter

December – February

The main window for major pruning and hedge renovation. Most deciduous trees are dormant, so structure is easy to see and the tree is under less stress.

Spring

March – May

1 March marks the start of bird nesting season in the UK. Hedge and tree work from this point needs a nesting check first, so it's a better season for planting and lighter jobs than major cutting.

Summer

June – August

Nesting season runs until 31 August, so a check is still needed, but most hedges get their main annual cut once fledging is done.

Main hedge trim, typically late June to July
Stone fruit tree pruning (plum, cherry), to reduce disease risk
Regular mowing and lawn maintenance
General garden upkeep and clearance

Autumn

September – November

The best time of year to lay turf, and a good point to plan bigger tree or hedge work for the dormant season ahead.

This is general guidance, not a fixed schedule. The right timing depends on the species, the site, and the condition of what's being worked on. All wild birds, their nests and eggs are protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and we check for active nests before taking on any hedge or tree work between March and August.
